LL.B. DEGREE PROGRAMME IN LAW
Duration: Direct Entry – 4 years, UTME – 5 years

The law programme, therefore, seeks to introduce a student to law, expose him to many principles of judicial process and legal development and equip him with the basic tools of legal analysis or legal methods, including legal research and writing skills, communications and advocacy skills and the ethical values of legal training and practice. The programme aims to do all these sensitive things to the dictates of Godliness and love for humanity – attributes exemplified by the University’s motto of “Excellence and Godliness.”

• Active Legal practice as a Litigation Lawyer
  A lawyer is an advocate, a barrister, a solicitor, a legal practitioner and a counsel. He can set up his own law practice immediately after being called to the Bar. He can join an established law office to practice his profession. He takes briefs (cases) and handles them on agreed charges. He can rise to become a Magistrate, a Judge or a Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
• State Counsel at the Federal level
  There is a Federal Ministry of Justice. Again, each State has a State Ministry of Justice that handles advisory and court matters involving State Governments. A lawyer can enter as a State counsel, rise to the posts of Senior State Counsel, Principal State Counsel, Chief State Counsel, Assistant Director, Deputy Director, Director and a Permanent Secretary and Solicitor General. He may be elevated to the bench as a High Court Judge.
• Appointment to the Bench
  A qualified Lawyer can become a Magistrate or a Judge depending on career aspirations and openings. He can therefrom rise to the position of the Chief Justice of Nigeria. Appointment to the High Court bench may be from private practice, magistracy, high court registry and the academia and openings. He can therefore rise to the position of the Chief Justice of Nigeria.
• Legal Officers in Government Parastatals/Agencies/NGO/International Organizations.
  A Lawyer can be a legal officer in government established parastatals or agencies. Non- governmental organization and other international organization.
• Company Secretaries
  A Lawyer can be an in-house legal adviser to a company.
• Registrars in the Apex Court
  A Lawyer can be appointed as a Court Registrar in the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
• Law Lecturers
  A Lawyer can be a University Lecturer. He can rise to become a Professor of Law or even a SAN. He can also become a Judge through this professional route.

The Law programme is designed to ensure that graduates of Law will have a clear understanding of the place and importance of law in society. Because all human activities – social, economic, political, etc. – take place within a legal framework, it is necessary that the student of law should have a broad general knowledge and exposure to other disciplines in the process of acquiring legal education. Legal Education should, therefore, act first as a stimulus to stir the student into critical analysis and examination of the prevailing social, economic and political systems of his community. Secondly, as an intellectual exercise aimed at studying and assessing the operational efficacy and relevance of various rules of law in the society, and thirdly, equip the student with skills that are necessary for him to accomplish his/her task and render satisfactory service.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”OBJECTIVES” tab_id=”objectives-private-commerical-law”][vc_column_text]The law programme is specifically aimed at:

1. producing Law graduates who can use law as a tool for the resolution of various social, economic and political conflicts in society;
2. producing God fearing and conscientious lawyers whose level of education will equip them properly to serve as leaders, statesmen, advisers to governments and their agencies, international organisations and institutions, multinational corporations, companies, business firms, associations, individuals and families, etc;
3. providing skilled and enterprising law graduates for service in diverse tasks in the public and private sectors. The fact is that governments, companies, private sector and, to some extent, even individuals and their activities are creatures of law expected to operate within a legal framework. Therefore, the output or end result of the system designed will be fed to such agencies and institutions as international organisations and agencies, academic teaching and research institutions, federal, state and local government bodies, various industrial, commercial and mercantile associations.
